Dawn + Vinegar = Soap Scum KILLA

So, you might remember this post from a while back. And if you do, you'll remember that I cannot stand soap scum. Like, it actually bothers me. I hate that we have this gorgeous bathroom, and all I can see is the soap scum that threatens to take over. And God help me if hubby and I are in the shower together (hey, we're in a water shortage) and I accidentally touch the walls. Ugh, gives me the heebie jeebies just thinking about it.

I've tried it all. Kaboom. 409. Every bottle that promises to get rid of the soap scum. And I'm left disappointed every. single. time.

So when I saw this post on pinterest, I was a bit skeptical. Magic in a bottle? Yeah, okay. But I figure, what did I have to lose? So the next time I went to Walmart, I figure I could drop $3 on a bottle of Dawn and a spray bottle. We already had a huge bottle of white vinegar, thanks to Lover cleaning his stinky Vibrams (those weird 5 toe shoe things that make him look like he has swamp creature feet).

My oldest daughter asked me if I bought the Dawn just because it had a penguin on it (I collect penguins).

So it's pretty simple. Heat up some vinegar (I used a cup of vinegar and nuked it for 2 minutes). Then pour it in your spray bottle, add an equal amount of blue Dawn (the website comments were pretty specific about getting the blue kind), shake gently, and voila!

Again, that's a one to one ratio of white vinegar to blue Dawn. I measured out a cup of each originally, but only used about half of my bottle. So next time I'll just do a half cup of each. The whole point is that the white vinegar is heated up, and while I haven't used it with it being room temperature and don't know if it'd work just as well, I'd rather just make it fresh each time. Especially if it's going to give me super clean results.

Here is what we're dealing with. Gross, right? You can't tell me you'd want to touch that in the shower either. EWWWWW.

Do you know how hard it is to take a pic of soap scum? I finally figured out that I had to place the camera on the door and face it down with the flash on.

Isn't that gross? I know I already said that, but man. Ewww.

So the website said that you can spray it on and leave it overnight for tough stains. But have you ever tried to spray on a cleaner on a vertical surface? What's the first thing that happens? It all slides down. BUT, with the vinegar Dawn spray, it's a bit thicker, almost like a watery gel, and it stayed on the glass where I sprayed it. Yeah, a few places dripped, but it was staying. Holy crap.

I let it sit for 2 hours, came back in with a sponge and some warm water, and wiped it off. And holy crap.

Yes, that is an unedited (except for the watermark, obviously) photo of the same area. And that isn't soap scum at the bottom, it's the reflection of the shower floor (you can see the drain). Isn't that crazy? Lover came in to see it when he got home from work, and he said "Holy crap, it looks freaking new!". It totally shocked me when I walked in the bathroom this morning when hubs was taking a shower. Usually it looks like he's standing behind a frosted glass door where all you can see is his head. But this morning, it was completely clear. Like brand spanking new.

So if your nemesis is soap scum, give it a shot. It'll cost ya under $5 even if you have to buy everything, which is cheaper than the other cleaners that aren't working. I will warn you that it stinks to high heaven and I'd recommend putting on the bathroom vent. But for results like these, it was worth it for me.

No, I'm not getting paid to post this. I wish I was! But ya know, Dawn making people, feel free to send a big ole check my way.

Update! I did have a nice reader send me this. Thanks Herb! "Today, I called P&G - NO ammonia or ammonia producing ingredients in Dawn Blue.  I also asked was there a difference between Original Blue Dawn, Dawn Original Scent & Dawn Ultra Original Scent.  The P&G person said Original Blue Dawn is referred to as Non Ultra (not concentrated) while Dawn Ultra (2X) Blue Original Scent is concentrated.  The non Ultra is hard to find so most of the folks in your blog comments that complain the mix is too soapy are probably using Ultra & need to halve the Dawn."

  1. I am so trying this. I'm like you... forever fighting the soap scum battle. I laughed when you talked about showering with your hubs and not wanting to touch the walls... that sounds like me too. Funny!

  2. ohhhh I'm all over this next time I decide to clean my bathroom! I actually put a shower curtain in front of my shower door to hide it's ugliness, this may work better!

  3. I have seen this a couple times on pinterest and keep debating whether to try it. IT's on my shopping list. Suck it, soap scum!

And you rock for posting this.

  4. I did this mix of heated up vinegar mixed with Dawn on my microwave yesterday. Seriously...It was like it just pulled the grossness out of there like a magnet.

  6. thank God i dont have that kind of white soap scum, but what we have is like a brown stain on our textured floor from the red dirt stained feet we have. i wonder if it would work on that? cause not even bleach takes it off.

  7. Mr. B and I ran out and bought the stuff, we will see the results tomorrow. If I have as good of results as you, you may see a link up of my post. But believe me my before pick is so much worse.

  8. We rushed out and bought the stuff and you were right!! Amazing I would have never believed it! Also I tried it on that nasty oily dust that collects on the range hood over the stove. I left it on for about 20 minutes and it wiped off all the crud. Thanks for sharing. Definately a high of my week :)

  9. Does anyone know if it HAS to be Dawn? I'm in the UK and it's not something we have, exactly.

  10. i am so gonna try this. we have burgandy/dark walls in our shower so the scum shows up pretty bad. We usually have to take a razor and get it off. I know - yuck - but i promise i do clean. Can't wait to try this.

  15. Oh my shower is SO bad! I have three guys (hubby and 2 teenage sons...not just 3 random guys. Just clarifying that) who use the shower in my basement, and they are responsible for cleaning it. Guess what? It looks like it's "cleaned" by three guys. Grodey! I just mixed a batch and sprayed on the whole bottle (1 cup of each) It is sticking to the shower walls like magic. I'll let you know how it works. I just may let it sit overnight, and clean in the morning when the banshees have left for work.

  19. I keep hearing amazing cleaning/stain treating tips about the original blue Dawn dish soap. Someone swore by it for laundry stains. I do wonder...what's in the blue soap to make it so effective? lol Thanks for the detailed post about this.

  20. @WestMIWifenMommy

I use the blue Dawn (well the blue Wal-Mart brand Dawn for those weird spots you get sometimes in the laundry from dryer sheets, and it takes them right off. It also works for stains/grease from taco-type meat, spaghetti, just about anything the 8yr old monster will eat. The trick for laundry is to drip one or two drops on the spot, rub it in with your finger, and let it sit for a while - I always wash with cold, and I usually don't see the stains until they've gone through the wash & dry cycle completely, so it is pretty much a miracle method.
I'm SO gonna try this on my NASTY molded tub. 15 years old and it has the grossest dark places in the bottom. True story - the only product in all those years that has removed that blechy stuff? Wal-Mart brand lavender baby wash. A little scary if you think about it...

  21. Has anyone made this and saved it and used later on? I own a maid cleaning service and would love to start using this but I wouldn't be able to use a fresh batch each house/bathroom.

  22. THANK YOU, FOR THIS POST!!!! I tried this, with a little skepticism....because our soap scum was really, really bad. I let it sit for 2 hours, and imagine my surprise when the soap scum just came right off!!!! I literally squealed with delight. Hubby was cracking up! Thanks!

  23. ~I've used this and when I'm done, I've applied Rain X~ http://www.rainx.com/ a product often applied to windshields. It helps put a finish which is clear on your glass and repels the water better. I love the results, for it stretches the time between having to do a DEEP Cleaning.

  24. We are full-time RVer's and we HATE soap scum in our shower. I can't wait to try this!!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. While it totally got the soap scum off of the shower walls and tub, I had a hard time rinsing my rag between swipes. It was REALLY soapy! Did I do something wrong or did I just not heat the vinegar enough?

  26. After seeing this on pinterest, I thought I would give it a try....and me being the impatient person that I am- I did not have blue dawn, but I had the pineapple dawn on hand, so I tried it anyway. I took your advice and cut in half, so I did 1/2 cup of each.(I have to admit, the pineapple/vinegary smell was WEIRD) but Oh. My. Gosh. My shower doors look brand spanking NEW!!! I love this! thank you for posting!
Between my home made laundry detergent that I found on pinterest and all the other cost saving cleaning ideas I have found, I can go shopping for MORE craft supplies this weekend!! LOL

  27. I'll be trying this for sure! One thing that does help to cut down on soap scum that I do after each shower (because I can't stand scummy shower doors and I can't clean every day) is to squeegy the doors before you get out. Really helps.

  28. I had the same problem as Jennifer. It was so soapy. It worked really well, but it took some time to get the soap washed off.

I'm going to try the mixture. I hope it will work on the tile walls, too.

  34. @rlc, I think that IS hard water she had on her shower door, not soap scum. Though it could be a little of both in the shower.

Vinegar works fantastic on hard water spots, you can try it straight, or try this. I use straight white vinegar on my fridge where the water dispenser drips and makes hard water stains.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Vinegar is the active ingredient here, the dish soap is really just a thickening agent to allow it to stay where you spray it longer. I'm guessing whoever came up with this thought Dawn was the best/thickest to use. I would also think that it should work if you reheat it.

  39. @Rhiannon To clean your shower floor: Buy cheap dishwasher detergent (liguid). Spread it all over the floor, generously. Let it sit for a couple hours, then scrub lightly and rinse.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Because the Feb 20th post said that the dish detergent was mostly a thickening agent, I tried thickening the hot vinegar with 1T of corn starch. Then I only had to add 2 or 3 T of dish detergent. It made a powerful vinegar "gel" that REALLY clung to the shower walls. Because it stuck to the wall so well, it had more time to work on the stains. After an hour, I wiped and rinsed. GOOD BYE SOAP SCUM. GOOD BYE HARD WATER STAINS!! Easier clean up than using a cup of detergent...too sudsy for me. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!!!

I feel bad for anyone who does not live in a place where you can get Dawn Dish Soap... and the original blue. It is the best ever for dishes. I would suggest trying to go online and seeing if you can order it to be shipped there. Well worth the shot.. trust me. You would never go back! My guess is you would have something similar. Do you have a blue dish soap?

  54. OK. I take it back. SO WORTH THE BURN!!! LOL I have never had a cleaner that allows me to just wipe it away. I always have to scrub and sweat and spend a LOT of time cleaning it. This was spray, walk away, come back, I rinsed THEN wiped, that way there wasn't AS much soap in the cloth. BRILLIANT! The hardware is even sparkling! I thought that stuff was forever to be dingy! It cut right through it! AND RUST!!! LOVE IT!!! THANK YOU!!!

  56. Well I've just sprayed my entire shower with this stuff and am waiting to wipe it off. The smell was a lot stronger than I was expecting. I started to freak out that I was creating some sort of chemical reaction, so I called Dawn. They said not to mix their soap with anything >_< but too late! I figure if everyone here has done it and survived that I should too. Can't wait to see if its worth the bad smell.

  57. Tried this today. It worked great just as promised! The only issue I have with it is the horrible smell. I had to open all the windows in the house for about 4 hours to get the smell out. I followed that up with potent essential oils air freshener! Any ideas on how to get the smell out of my microwave? I really do not want everything I nuke to smell like vinegar. I think next time I will just heat it on the stove to avoid this problem in the future.

  61. I just tried it ... we recently remodeled bathroom and don't have a glass door but have new tiles ... and I don't want them to get scummy. So I cleaned them with it, then I got worried that the blue dawn would stain new grout (it is sealed though) and it cleaned it beautifully. The smell isn't that bad, there are WORSE smells than vinegar (I work in a hospital LOL) ...

    ReplyDelete
  62. Phenomenal! I have struggled with soap scum as it is a pet peeve. Just ask my kids! Tried everything on the market. Some have such strong odors and you have such high hopes they will do what they say they will only to be greatly dissapointed. This worked beautifully! My spray bottle only worked in a stream so I took the nozzle off an empty Windex bottle and it sprayed great. Although I'm allergic to Dawn, it was no sacrifice to wear gloves because I got a beautiful tub and shower! I have since checked out other uses of vinegar. Check out this site: http://vinegartips.com/Scripts/. Thanks for the great idea! You rock!

  69. Ok...I just used the formula using green apple scented ultra Dawn and vinegar...I used 3/4 Dawn to 1 cup vinegar...WOW...I only let it sit about 5 minutes...still very, very sudsy so next time I will try 2/3 cup Dawn. I had months worth of soap scum on 22 yr old glass shower doors that I swear have perma scum...I'd say 95% of the scum came up very easily using one of those yellow sponges with the green scrubby on the back of it. I think in a couple of weeks when I redo it, the rest will come up easily. I also used wet, used "every day" facecloths to remove the cleaner after scrubbing..much easier and less messy.

  71. Did not have blue Dawn.. in fact, did not have dawn of any kind.. couldn't wait to try this..so I used AJAX dishwashing liquid.. while it didn't exactly "stick like gobs" to the walls it did stay a bit longer than regular spray from a bottle. I left it about 15 minutes then rinsed off.. Pretty good results.. can only imagine how good blue Dawn will work .. I feel like the acutal hard working ingredient is really the white viegar which is such a good thing to use on many, many things.. thanks for posting this recipe. I will be mixing the original recipe as soon as I make a trip to Walmart...

  72. @AgentWoods I use Fairy and vinegar. As Fairy is not as thick as Dawn you will need to mix half and half, like in 1 cup vinegar, 1 cup Fairy. It works wonders!

Dawn definitely works on laundry stains! I wonder if you can use this with the vinegar being room temperature so it does not have to be heated every time I clean the shower.

For those asking about tile grout, the best thing I have found is peroxide! I got a grout brush at Wal-mart ($1.97) and one BIG ole bottle of Perioxide. I put the peroxide in a spray bottle. The difference is AMAZING!

  77. I made some up awhile back and filled up half the bottle (24 oz bottle). After the initial use I had some left over so I've been using it at room temp with the same results. Pretty cheap and works great!

  78. After years of purchasing tons of products that say they remove soap scum, I was a little skeptical with this recipe. Who would have thunk vinegar and dawn could be so magical!? I can't believe how well this works! SO glad I tried it. Thanks so much for posting it!

  83. I hate to be the kill joy, but I do NOT recommend this for tile and grout tubs. I'm sure it may work wonders for glass shower doors, but it was way too much trouble to clean off my tub tile and grout. Now I have some blue stains on my grout. I used the 1 cup blue dawn and 1 cup hot vinegar mixture and sprayed almost all of it all over the tile walls and tub floor. It let it sit for about 2 hrs. The mixture produced TONS of suds. So far, I've washed it off once with a sponge, scrubbed hard once with a hard bristle brush (trying to remove blue stains in grout) and washed off again with a wash cloth. I swear, the walls STILL suds up when water is applied to them again. Yeah, the tub is clean, but I think it is more because I've now washed and scrubbed the tub 3x!

    1. I would try it with like double the vinegar, if you try to make it again. That's what I'm going to do anyway. I thought there was a little too much dawn. But it still worked great for me. Just a thought.

  85. I'm a bit late to the game, but for those of you wondering, it does not have to be Dawn. I used a previous commenters recipe that just thickens the vinegar with cornstarch and adds a bit of dish detergent. Worked great. I also used it cold, made a batch the night before with about a tablespoon of detergent and sprayed it in the bath the next morning before running errands. It stuck and wiped up beautifully. It also came out of my spray bottle a lot better than when I tried 3-4 Tablespoons of soap. probably because there were too many bubbles in the first batch. I can shake the second batch and not have any problem. Just make sure you coat everything really well because it will not work on areas you did not spray.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Just what I've been looking for!! Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I used this today. Heated the vinegar on my stove top added both the vinegar and blue dawn to a spray bottle with no problem. I sprayed the shower doors down and let it sit for a couple of hours while I did some other things. I just finished wiping and rinsing. I have a hand held shower head that helped with the rinsing. Where ever I saw remnants of scum I just wiped with the sponge that still had the mixture on it and off it came. I love this because normally I would spend at least an hour in the shower with my scrub brush and Lime Away or whatever chemical I would try that go around. The vinegar smell was strong as I sprayed and made me gasp but it does that when I add it to hot food as well. I just turned on the fan and opened the windows. Try it you will be happy you did. Now off to shower number 2!

I hated having my kids use that shower/tub because I couldn't get it cleaned from the last people who lived here, and I've tried EVERYTHING!

I realize you posted this comment many many months ago, but for those who are wondering about Dawn's eco-friendliness, notice that the back of the bottle says NO PHOSPHATES. This is a good thing, because one of the big problems that wastewater treatment plants have is phosphate removal due to large incoming amounts from shampoos/detergents/etc, so a lot of phosphates end up in water sources, which (long explanation here) ends up being bad for animals. I imagine that's why there are penguins on the Dawn bottle? Either that or because they use it to clean up animals after oil spills.

But long story short: One bottle of Dawn shouldn't compromise your environmentally -friendly efforts too much.

  94. I just tried this. AND HANDS DOWN this is amazing! :) I just watch the soap scum fall right off. It makes me soo happy :P

I've also been trying to scrub soap scum off my Dad's shower for years. It comes off, but not all of it comes out. So I'm soo excited to see it come right off! Wuhoo~

thank you! thank you! thank you!

  95. Awesome !!!!!!! I am kind of obsessed with the results! I cleaned my tub last night, found a spot to try it on, on the living room carpet earlier today & just finished cleaning my stand up shower!! Amazed. It smells terrible (vinegar) while it is sitting (I let everything sit on for a good while), but once it's gone so is the smell & it's super clean! I'm so happy to be going to bed with a clean shower & tub, with two little ones this does not happen often. I love that these are harsh chemicals either. I jumped right into my shower & steamed it up, washing myself as I wiped down with walls! :) seriously thank you for posting this!!!

  96. Loved this for my shower door! Definitely going to make some more of it! And I blogged about it.

    1. I used Costco's Kirkland environmentally friendly dish soap with the vimegar. It works like magic. I swear, I've never seen anything clean my tub the way this does, and I've uses tons of useless cleaners. I've actually used the leftover from the spray bottle (not a fresh batch), and it works great. I'm in love with this stuff.

  99. Just tried this. Didn't have a spray bottle so I mixed the dawn and vinager in a storage container and wiped it on. Used it on the whole shower. OMG!!! it so worked.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Well, yay for all of you who say this works. I did not have the same results. Contrary to the original posting, this mixture dripped and was not gel-like. I ended up going back a total of four times to respray - and that is normally what I do with the store-bought soap/scum cleaners. The very bottom of the shower - the part that has the worst scum build-up, still did not clean up.

You have to be sure to rinse this mixture with water because it definitely does leave its own soap residue.

    ReplyDelete
  101. I didn't get to leave it on as long as I wanted to -- daughter needed a shower -- but I felt there was way too much residual Dawn left on the shower door! It was really soapy the minute I tried to wipe it down. I ended up jumping in the shower and using the spray nozzle to rinse if off 'cause it would have taken me forever to do it with my sponge and bucket. BUT -- not only did it take off the soap scum/hard water, it also got rid of these gross orange-ish hard water stains we get around the edges of the shower base, that NOTHING else would clean except the super hardcore cleaners that I don't like to buy! So I will definitely do this again -- just with less Dawn.

  102. i am going to try this today! we have soap scum in both our bath/showers and i am so tired of the beach fumes from clorox tub and tile. every time i use clorox i feel like i killed brain cells and i am about to pass out and vomit all at the same time - so bad for me. i just bought a big jug of vinegar. i can't wait. i repined on pinterest too :) thanks for posting!!!

I am also suffering from lack of ventilation - feel like I seriously burned by lungs and sinuses. Hope it's worth it! I haven't wiped the shower out yet.

  105. I am very excited to try this! I have just discovered that using that wonderful degreaser, Dawn, alone would remove soap scum fairly well, but adding vinegar to it makes sense also as it cuts through hard water and is a natural disinfectant. I already us vinegar in cleaning elsewhere. (Using lemon and/or lavender essential oils can help w/ the smell. Only use a drop or 2 to start with, though!) See this link for a GREAT laminate floor cleaner w/ no streaks!! http://naturesnurtureblog.com/2012/04/19/homemade-floor-all-purpose-cleaner/.

  106. I used it on my tub and shower and it worked wonders. My tub is fiberglass and my surround is all white subway tile with white grout. I did NOT have any staining issues. I used 1 part dawn (blue) to 2 parts vinegar (which I did not heat up...) and sprayed it thick. Left it to sit for an hour then just sprayed it off. The smell was pretty horrendous while it was on the wall but it dissipated quickly once I rinsed it off.

  107. I used 1 part dawn to 2 parts vinegar. Worked great.

    Answers to Qs:
Didn't heat it up. Used the leftovers the following week on the shower curtain.
Don't really think that it has to be Dawn brand dish soap, just a thick dish soap.
It is really sudsy. I have to spray it off with my shower head (it is the removable kind with a hose attached). I like the idea of using cornstarch & dawn as a thickener to cut down on the dawn even more.

I am also going to play with adding something to get rid of mineral/hard water deposits because that still required a little scrubbing.

    1. Hi, just wondering if you ending up making a DIY cleaner for mineral/hard water deposits?

      Delete
  108. Most Dawn stocked these days is the ultra-concentrated kind, not the original kind. (At least at my store) That's why a lot of us are getting so many suds.

You need to adjust for the difference. I think I ended up using 1/8 cup in 32 oz bottle.

I also added a bit of lemon juice to counteract the vinegar smell since my husband can't stand it.

    ReplyDelete
  109. you are my HERO!!! it DOES WORK!!! AMAZING... I tried it with my normal dish soap (no Dawn in France) and IT WORKS like a charm!

  111. We avoid bar soap in our home and we never get soap scum with the liquid soap. Never-the-less, this is good for clean the shower and for other areas of the house.

    ReplyDelete
  112. @rlc

We have HORRIBLE rusty looking hard water stains in our shower (if left untreated.) Tip that came from our landlord, (who lives around the block with the same hard water problem) is to use "Toilet Ring Remover" from Ace Hardware. It's around $8/bottle, but it's totally worth it to remove those awful stains! Put it straight into a spray bottle, spray your shower, tub, sink, toilet, whatever, and let it sit for half an hour or so. Later, just wipe it down! And once you start treating it, if you keep up with it, it's easy to keep up with.

    ReplyDelete
  113. I just tried this yesterday, although I had to make the necessary "hurried SAHM modifications" of running out of dawn after about three squirts, and trying to rush through the wiping due to two screaming kids; but it was still the best my shower has looked in months! No more nasty chemicals for me! Great tutorial!

  114. I gotta tell you that I tried this today and my husband, who has mild asthma, had to leave the house he was choking so badly on the fumes. I've seen recipes now that have a lesser concentration, but this one did him in and I'm in the dog house. Thought it would be natural=mild. I've since seen others posting the coughing problem too. You might want to put out a disclaimer.

  115. After you get the soap Scum off, spray your glass with rain-X or some kind of car wax it keeps glass doors from building up this stuff. For the bottom of floor in shower use magic eraser no bleach needed. I have cleaned homes for 25 years and use dawn in cleaners for kitchens its not toxic smells good and rinses clean. The cleaners with scents Added you will ALWAYS need to rinse especially around food areas or floors(or they are going to be sticky). Most people don't read instructions but be aware its there to RINSE ALL SERVICES AFTER YOU USE CLEANERS.

  117. I just sprayed down the bathroom - and I do have a tile wall within the tub/shower area. I did not use "blue dawn" since I have the clear (bleach alternative) that I use for soaking Pans - did I mention I love this formula. I set the time for one hour- and I am going to see how its going - will post back after we are done. Thanks- Also, my brother mentioned if you add a teaspoon of baking soda to this mixture -you can get the "skunk" stink out of a dog. His dog was sprayed a few days ago, and this is exactly what he used - plus the baking soda !!

  121. Vinegar works on hard water spots, soap scum, and RUST! Just be careful not to use it too often, because it is also corrosive and it will eventually etch tiny microscopic lines into your glass, tile, etc. (bleach does the same thing.) Those microscopic lines collect scum & dirt. Once you have a clean shower & tub, try keeping the soap scum at bay by using Scrubbing Bubbles or a similar product that is NOT corrosive.
Also, for those people asking about grout: Once you have your grout clean (Or better yet, when it's brand new), use a grout SEALER and it will keep mildew & mold, stains, etc. from forming. Re-apply the grout sealer yearly. You can buy it at Home Depot or Lowe's.

  123. Installing a water softener will help with limescale which eats the surface of everything. I think less Dawn could be used but then it would be drippy although it would be a lot easier to wash off due to less suds. Vinegar cleans everything - including the inside works of your coffee pot so why shouldn't it clean your shower?

  131. This is truly a hidden gem!! I am not an ambitious house cleaner. I would rather close the door than clean. In an area of hard water that means the tub/shower enclosure is nothing short of gross. I heated 2 cups of vinegar & then realized I only had 3/4 cup of Dawn. This still worked amazing on a shower that I can't remember when it was last cleaned. Hard water stains/scum or soap scum , whatever, my hubby said our 22 year old shower looks brand new!!

  133. I tried this, I must have over looked the part that said heat the Viniger , but it worked great with out heating it up. I had bad soap scum and it all came off! Without heating anything up. I'm going to try and heat it up next time and see if there is a difference.

  134. I tried this. Forgot to heat vinegar, but even at room temp it works. I love it!!!! I used to buy Scrubbing Bubbles Max....$5 a can. Never cleaned as good as this. I started making my own fabric softener too..... 1 bottle Suave conditioner, 3 c. vinegar, 6 c. hot water. I can make 3 batches for less than the cost if 1 bottle of Downy. Next up is homemade laundry soap. Clean House & $$$ in my pocket!

  145. Buy a squeegie and use it after every shower, on the walls, door and floor. My husband has no problem doing this after every shower. Leave the door to shower open so that it can dry completely. You will have no scum and no mold.

    ReplyDelete
  146. We squeegee and then also do a quick wipe down with a microfiber cloth. But I still use the Dawn/vinegar mixture every couple of weeks, and it is truly amazing stuff! No need to reheat. I also use it in the toilets. First I sprinkle in some baking soda, then some white vinegar, and spritz with Dawn/vinegar, let sit a while, and it really does a great job. Agree with the poster who uses vinegar as laundry softener. Cheap and works good. I've also made my own laundry detergent for several years. All $ in my pocket!

    ReplyDelete
  164. I would agree with ChemicalBilly in the sense that you need a specific cleaner to get rid of soap scum. Mixing Vinegar and detergent will remove some minerals but to efficiently remove soap scum you need a higher pH. All vinegar is really is acetic acid and water. This is a low pH that can remove scale, not soap scum. I've seen bioworx and it uses a higher pH which is needed to get rid of soap scum. Also, detergents contain pretty nasty chemicals, another plus to use a chemical like bioworx which doesnt use any.

  170. I am so glad i stumbled on this blog. Just picked my son up from grad school. He says to me mom, can you help me clean a little before we turn the keys in? I say sure, I pick up a bottle of Kaboom (cute) at the store and head to his place and nearly had a stroke when I walked into the bathroom ...I swear these dudes did not clean the shower ONE TIME since they moved in a year and a half ago. Seriously, I thought I was going to have to get a putty knife to scrape the scum layer off. I did need two applications of this mixture (yes it was that bad) but it took it all off with very little effort on my part. This recipe saved my day, my son's security deposit, and most importantly my MANICURE. LOVE YOU!!!!!

  171. I bet if you tried clear Dawn with no dyes that it might not color grout as a few of you have posted. Has anyone tried it?

    ReplyDelete
  172. Blue dawn is safe for the environment, that is why it is the only one used on animals in oil spills. Also I read somewhere that we have to "train" our noses to associate vinegar smell as clean. (smile)

    ReplyDelete
  173. Great idea but can be very toxic! I grew up in a chemist's household and got a huge lecture the day I mixed bleach and Lysol (or ammonia and Lysol--can't remember now). The mixing of these ingredients is quite dangerous. Please open windows, doors, etc and have your pets outside before you do this. I don’t know for sure, but if Dawn has ammonia or bleach in it, then toxic fumes will be created.

Here is a quick blip I found:

Mixing bleach and vinegar is a bad idea. Toxic chlorine gas is released, which essentially serves as a way to wage chemical warfare on yourself. Many people mix bleach and vinegar, knowing it's dangerous, but either underestimating the risk or else hoping for increased cleaning power.

This forum post is good as well to explain.
